Social Media For Social Good. Go Vote!

I can’t believe it is time to vote again.  Four years go by really fast.  Heck. A year goes by really fast.  I remember back in January reading things about what’s to come of this election year.  Time does fly.  I am glad to live in an era where we have the advantages of knowing anything we need to know, and having that information available right at our fingertips.  Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest…Regardless of how you’re voting (D, R, or other), I am sure if you’re a social media enthusiast you have seen the  Presidential candidates post things on their perspective social media accounts.  Reading all of the posts and comments from each candidate, along with what their supports have to say brings a new responsibility to voting.

If you are worried about biased news reporters, research information yourself.  If you are worried about not staying up to date, use a social media outlet such as Twitter that tweets relatively up to date information straight from official sources.  If you are interested in what your friends are thinking, read their Facebook posts about it.There is absolutely no excuse for people who are not voting.  No one can claim to be ill informed. No one can claim to forget about when or where to vote (okay okay, this is because election talk is everywhere-not just social media).  My point is that today, more than ever before thanks to social media, we have been able to be informed of the good, bad, and everything in between in regards to our country and the people hoping to be in charge—need-to-know information as far as the American People are concerned.  Information that might not be known if reports went back to being in newspapers only.  I find that fascinating to think about….especially considering newspapers were the main source of information during elections not too far back into history.

On election day no matter what you believe in and how you decide to vote, make a stand and be proud of your decision.  While you’re waiting in line to vote maybe check out some (very) last minute tweets, Facebook status updates, and Instagram pictures of how your fellow Americans are voting.  It looks like the Presidential race is going to be close this year, but one thing is for sure–Social Media will be there with us every step of the way.

New Learnings

Before taking the NMDL class, I thought I knew a lot about social media.  After the first few weeks I realized how little I knew.  It’s no surprise that this week has also brought a lot of new and improved social media lessons for me.  Squidoo is a social media tool I have never used before.  After creating an account and noticing how great it is, I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it was so foreign to me before this assignment.  As a younger generation student I want to be involved in every aspect of social media.  Having said that, I cannot wait to dive in deeper into the world of Squidoo, and all of the other websites I am currently unfamiliar with.  Social media is such an important part of advertising, marketing, and journalism.  Which are all very important to Lisa–the student.  But social media does not stop there.  It has become a way of life for so many people of every generation.  This is why it goes way beyond being a student.  Lisa–the young student, daughter, employee, friend, and learner can appreciate that on a different level that is more than just educational.  It’s very interesting to be involved in a topic that offers two fundamentally different values.

Hopefully all of you will realize what a gem Squidoo is and we can connect on there as well: http://www.squidoo.com/lisa_pietrandrea

Thanks for listening!

Favorite Forms of Advertising

If you could pick one form of advertising as your favorite…What would it be?  I drive a lot.  A lot a lot a lot.  So even though it is known as the “boring” form, I’ve gotta say that I do enjoy a good billboard.  I especially like how creative some companies get with their billboards.  Instead of using the typical rectangular shape, now we see things at angles, we see outlines of people on the tops of billboards, things hanging off the sides, 3D billboards, and so on. When you see a billboard that goes above and beyond the norm, you know some creative minds went into it.  As a creative thinker, I appreciate the effort that goes into these boards and they become memorable to me.  Especially on a long car ride, it is nice to see a billboard that stands out.

AdAge Ad Facts Courtesy of Matthew Creamer

I had to share this info graphic from an Ad Age article I read today.  The author of the article is Matthew Creamer and he wrote an amazing article about Marketing and how to predict the future of this field.

Received from adage.com in an article written by Matthew Creamer on October 8, 2012

I think my generation really takes a lot of this technology for granted.  Can anyone really remember life before Iphones, Androids, GPS systems in cars (or on your phone for that matter), applications that can be purchased anywhere from smart phones/gadgets and computers to television sets, etc.  This list is endless. In the scheme of things, five years doesn’t seem like such a long time ago.  On the other hand, it seems like I have had my smart phone for…much longer than five years.  It’s crazy to think about, in my opinion at least.  This info graphic really spelled out to me how new this technology is.  It makes me wonder what other advances we’ll see in ten, fifteen, twenty, years down the line.

Self-Advertising

Technology has changed every area of study over the last few decades.  But as a student studying advertising, I feel it has been especially crucial in the new developmental ways of communication, marketing, and advertising.

Blogging for instance has taken the world wide web by storm.  David Meerman Scott gives a few staggering statistics in his book about his blog.  He stated that a post of his that included new PR ideas along with a link connecting readers to an e-book he had written on the subject, had thousands of views when it was first posted.  Currently, that number grew to over a quarter of a million people who have viewed this post, along with thousands of other people commenting and re-blogging on similar websites.

According to Pingdom, in 2011, there were a total of 70 million WordPress blogs.  Based on my research, I’m making an educated guess that 70 million blogs will turn into 80 million blogs over time.  Which will then turn into 90 million blogs, etc.  The amazing thing about these millions of blogs is that they cater to individual needs based on the self advertising of each blogger.

The Bark is a blog all about dogs, Blog Her is a blog dedicated to women, and For the Love of Cooking is a blog about recipes and good cooking.  Each individual blogging website and blogger has an identity that shines throughout blog entries.  They can decide how to build their internet image based on what they share in their posts and what they blog about.  Compared to an advertising student who thinks more in depth about advertisements, your average blogger might not consider that to be advertising.  But in reality, that is arguably one of the best forms of advertising out there.  It is direct, the blogger can put exactly what he/she wants on his/her profile, it is cheap, and they are easy to promote.  Social media has allowed blogs to be seen on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, to name a few.

Self advertising is a great way to express yourself through blogging.  It is nice to see that we have 70 million people (and counting) who are already taking advantage of what blogs have to offer.  In doing so they are helping people all over the world with what they are sharing in these blogs.
